What is CPM?

CPM means cost per mille: the cost of 1,000 ad impressions. It's the standard pricing unit for awareness advertising, letting you compare the cost of reach across very different platforms. The formula is simple:

CPM = (cost ÷ impressions) × 1,000

So $500 spent for 100,000 impressions is a $5.00 CPM. Rearranged, the same identity gives you ad spend (CPM × impressions ÷ 1,000) or impressions (cost ÷ CPM × 1,000), which is why you only ever need two of the three.

CPM vs CPC vs CPA

  • CPM: you pay per 1,000 impressions. Best for awareness and reach.
  • CPC: you pay per click. Best for driving traffic; tied to CPM by your click-through rate.
  • CPA: you pay per acquisition or conversion. Best for direct results; tied to CPC by your conversion rate.

The campaign planner in the calculator connects all three, from impressions to clicks (CPC) to conversions (CPA) to revenue and ROAS, so you can see what a CPM budget actually returns.

How to lower your CPM

  • Refresh creative. Ad fatigue quietly inflates CPM; new variations reset it.
  • Improve relevance. Better targeting and quality scores earn cheaper impressions.
  • Right-size the audience. Too narrow spikes competition; too broad wastes reach.
  • Mind the calendar. Q4 and major events push CPMs up as advertisers crowd in.
  • Test placements. Feed, Stories, Reels and display can differ a lot in price.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CPM?
CPM stands for cost per mille, the cost of 1,000 ad impressions (an impression is one time your ad is shown). It's the standard way to price and compare awareness-style advertising across platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and programmatic display.
How do I calculate CPM?
Divide your total ad spend by the number of impressions, then multiply by 1,000: CPM = (cost ÷ impressions) × 1,000. For example, $500 spent for 100,000 impressions is a $5.00 CPM. This calculator also works backwards: give it any two of cost, CPM and impressions and it solves the third.
What is a good CPM?
It depends entirely on the platform and audience. Programmatic display can run under $4, Facebook and Instagram sit around $8–9 on average, and LinkedIn's B2B audience can exceed $30. The calculator marks your CPM against all nine platforms' typical ranges at once, so you can see where it would count as cheap and where it would be a premium.
What's the difference between CPM, CPC and CPA?
CPM charges per 1,000 impressions (paying for reach), CPC charges per click (paying for traffic), and CPA charges per acquisition or conversion (paying for results). CPM is best for awareness; CPC and CPA suit performance goals. The campaign planner above links them, from impressions to clicks (CPC) to conversions (CPA) and ROAS.
How can I lower my CPM?
Tighten or broaden your audience to reduce competition, refresh creative to fight ad fatigue, improve relevance and quality scores, avoid the most expensive placements, and steer clear of peak-competition periods like Q4. Even small relevance gains often cut CPM noticeably.
