Chronological Age Calculator

Find your exact age in years, months and days, counted the way official documents and standardized tests count it. If you're an SLP, psychologist or educator, switch to Professional mode for test-date tools, 5;04 notation and batch calculation. Every result shows the year, month and day subtraction with its borrows, so you can check it against a protocol worked by hand.

What is chronological age?

Your chronological age is the exact amount of time that has passed since you were born: your real, official age. It is the age recorded on your birth certificate and government identity documents, measured precisely in years, months, and days from your date of birth to any given date. When someone asks "how old are you?", your chronological age is the answer.

Chronological age vs biological age

🗓 Chronological age

The time elapsed since birth. Increases at exactly the same rate for everyone, one year per year. Used on your passport, driver's license, medical forms, and legal documents. This calculator measures it precisely.

🧬 Biological age

How old your cells and body systems actually are. It is shaped by genetics, diet, exercise, sleep, and health habits. Two people with the same chronological age can have very different biological ages. Sources: Mayo Clinic, Healthline.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter your (or a child's) date of birth.
  2. The reference date defaults to today. Change it to find your age on any date.
  3. Click Calculate Age to see your exact age in years, months, and days instantly.
  4. Want to copy or print the result? Use the buttons that appear after calculating.

How to calculate chronological age by hand

No calculator handy? Here's how to calculate chronological age by hand, using the borrow method that clinical assessments (Pearson, BRIGANCE) rely on:

  1. Write the reference date: 2026 / 06 / 13
  2. Write the date of birth: 2020 / 09 / 20
  3. Subtract days: 13 − 20 = negative → borrow from months. August has 31 days, so 13 + 31 = 44 − 20 = 24 days, carry −1 month.
  4. Subtract months: (6 − 1) − 9 = negative → borrow from years. (6 + 12 − 1) − 9 = 8 months, carry −1 year.
  5. Subtract years: (2026 − 1) − 2020 = 5 years.
  6. Result: 5 years, 8 months, 24 days, or 5;08 in test notation.

For professionals: SLP, psychologists, and educators

Need to calculate a child's chronological age for a standardized test? Switch to Professional mode in the calculator above for tools designed for clinical and educational assessments:

  • Years;Months;Days notation (e.g. 5;04), the format used in Pearson WISC-V, WIAT-4, BRIGANCE Screens III, and IEP documentation.
  • Total age in months for norm referencing and developmental milestone comparisons.
  • Corrected (adjusted) age for premature infants: enter gestational weeks, applied until 24 months.
  • Batch mode, so you can run a whole caseload at once and export to CSV instead of typing each birthday one at a time.
  • Printable report in a clean format suitable for IEP files and clinical records.

Looking for the Pearson chronological age calculator? Pearson has retired theirs. This tool uses the same Years;Months;Days method, based on publicly documented assessment conventions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is chronological age?
Chronological age is the exact amount of time that has passed since you were born: your real, official age, the one recorded on your birth certificate and government ID. It is calculated in years, months, and days from your date of birth to a given date.
Is chronological age the same as my actual age?
Yes. Chronological age is your actual, objective age, the number you give when asked how old you are. It increases at the same rate for everyone, unlike biological age, which reflects how your body has physically aged.
What is the difference between chronological age and biological age?
Chronological age is fixed: it increases one year per year, equally for everyone. Biological age reflects how your cells and body systems have actually aged, shaped by genetics, lifestyle, diet, sleep, and health habits. Two people of the same chronological age can have very different biological ages. Someone who exercises regularly and eats well may have a biological age years younger than their chronological one.
How do I calculate a child's chronological age for a Pearson or BRIGANCE test?
Switch to Professional mode, enter the child's date of birth and the test date, and click Calculate. The result shows the age in Years;Months;Days notation (e.g. 5;04) and total age in months, the exact format expected by Pearson assessments (WISC-V, WIAT-4), BRIGANCE, and IEP documentation.
What is corrected age and when do I use it?
Corrected (adjusted) age is used for premature infants. It subtracts the weeks born early from the chronological age: correction = 40 − gestational weeks at birth. Enable the Corrected age toggle in Professional mode and enter the gestational weeks. Correction is typically applied until 24 months chronological age.
Why does my age differ slightly on standardized tests vs just subtracting years?
Standardized tests measure from the exact date of birth to the exact test date using actual calendar month lengths and a borrow method, not 30-day months. Subtracting birth year from the current year only gives you an approximation. This calculator uses the same borrow logic as clinical assessments.
Can I calculate ages for multiple children at once?
Yes. In Professional mode, click + Batch mode to add multiple rows (name, DOB, test date) and calculate all at once. You can then export the results as a CSV file.
Is my data stored or sent anywhere?
No. All calculations happen entirely in your browser using JavaScript. No birth dates, names, or results are ever sent to a server or stored anywhere.
